Make it your mission to have a good day

Writer: Jazmine WilliamsJazmine Williams

How many of us are too often robbed of today’s joys because of tomorrow’s worries and anxiety? This blog came to me Monday morning January  20th as I celebrated MLK Day and pondered on the inauguration of the 47th president of the US…

I was off work, had also taken off the Friday before but was feeling the dread of work the next day. In fact, the dread began Sunday, but I made it my mission to have a great Monday “inspite of”, as the ol’ folks used to say. Anyone who has ever dealt with anxiety or mental health challenges knows all too well how easy it is to succumb to those feelings and the voice in your head telling you that you should just give in. That you should just stay in bed. That it’s gonna be a bad day anyway, but the sun was shining and I forced myself up, and gave myself a pep talk. I found something cute to wear (because a cute outfit makes everything better) and headed to Napa with my son. No plan, but I knew shooting pics was in the list.

We drove down First Street (one of my favorite areas), parked and got out. I took a big deep breath as the sun beamed on my face. There’s something so healing about sunshine, it’s an immediate mood booster! We found the perfect spot for photos. My son captured the most amazing photos of me! Side-note, one thing Bay Area natives take for granted is the beauty that surrounds us! Look at these pictures!

People were passing just enjoying the day. We were met with smiles and good vibes. A couple passed, made small talk and complimented me. I must admit, I’m still quite awkward receiving compliments AND filming/shooting in public spaces.

Having a not-so-good day is easy work, especially if you’re struggling mentally. As a person who is still healing from various things, healing and having the good day is where the actual work is! Anything you stay in or practice long enough becomes second nature, happiness or unhappiness. It becomes your “safe space”. I know that may sound crazy to some, but as a person who’s experienced this, you can become incredibly comfortable in discomfort and where not-so-good days feel like the norm.

Tips to have a good day:

  • Start the day with prayer

  • Open the blinds and let in light

  • Turn on music that gets you going

  • Get dressed! No occasion needed

  • Talk nicely to yourself and declare what the day will be

In several of my blogs I encourage individuals to give themselves grace whenever it’s needed and I’m saying it again. Remember, the goal isn’t perfection, just to be better than you were yesterday.

Until next time…🦋
