Sunshine & Your Mood

Have you ever heard of Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD which is the old term for Major Depressive Disorder with a seasonal pattern or MDD. It’s a real thing folks. According to an article I read, it’s a psychological condition that results in depression, usually caused by seasonal changes. It usually affects women, adolescents and young adults.

I must admit, I’ve been spoiled my entire life growing up in beautiful California. Pretty amazing weather year round, but there is a huge misconception about the “Sunshine” state…it isn’t always sunny. In fact, it can get quite cold in the Bay Area which is where I live. I get a kick out of watching tourist walking around San Francisco in shorts and T-shirts in 40 something degree weather blanketed by Karl the fog, as it’s so affectionately named. Yes folks, there is so much fog in the bay that it’s been given a name. Remember this the next time you plan a visit.

I live further inland so we get some pretty nice weather year round which is why when we experience long bouts of rain or cold it changes everything about us. Speaking personally, I love the rain and I’m appreciative of every season, but there is something about the sun! There is something about the calm and smell of a day that’s going to be warm/hot. There is something about the way it jumpstarts your mood, motivates you to go outside and be productive. You know that weather that makes you wanna blast your favorite song as you take the long way home with all of the windows rolled down. Just me? Okay 🤷🏽‍♀️

My inner nerd knew there had to be scientific reasoning so on the hunt for more info I went. It says that sunlight triggers the release of the hormone serotonin in your brain. Serotonin in the brain is thought to regulate anxiety, happiness, and mood. What you say now! You see beautiful people, there is a reason you feel better when the sun is shining.

Personally, I could never live somewhere that was often cold or experienced long snowy winters. I’ve been asked, is there anywhere else you’d live besides California? The answer is, Hawaii. The weather is absolutely amazing! Yes it rains quite a bit, but 80 degree rain is nothing but liquid sunshine!

This blog was sparked by the amazing weather which debuted here this week. Today was about 83 degrees with minimal humidity, and tomorrow we’re looking at 86. I’m happy y’all, and super excited!

Does the weather affect you mood, or are you unbothered no matter the season?

Until next time….🦋 🌞
