No I Will Not Be Dying My Grays

If I had a dollar for every time someone asked me about dying my gray hair I’d be rich!

I began graying around 18. In fact, all of the women in my family grayed early. You wouldn’t know it because they all dye it. At 18 I noticed a gray or two, no big deal. A few years later a few more grays and by a few I mean a lot. Now that I’m 40, my entire head is almost completely gray. My hairstyle of choice is usually braids which I mix a bit of gray into, and it’s usually all the rave since it’s a trend now. Folks out here dying their hair gray on purpose!

Right now I’m rocking my natural hair which usually gets me several stares and backhanded compliments. I always find it hilariously annoying when people say, “wow, your hair is really gray, but you look so young. Why don’t you dye it?” This is when I refrain from responding with a sarcastic smart ass response, well 95% of the time…I mean it’s 100% if you round up 🤷🏽‍♀️.

Now, years ago I thought about dying it, then I had to ask myself why? It wasn’t because I didn’t like it, but more so to conform to the societal pressure of avoiding or delaying what gray hair is associated with, aging. Why are we so afraid of aging? Why is there such a negative stigma attached to something so beautiful?

I have no intention of dying away my grays. My response to those who must know why I don’t dye my hair? Simply put, I’ve earned them, each and every strand!

Until next time…🦋
